Grand Canyon bans sale of bottled water after all

WASTE & RECYCLING NEWS
Posted February 8, 2012

WASHINGTON (Feb. 8, 2:15 p.m. ET) -- The National Park Service is prohibiting the sale of plastic water bottles at the Grand Canyon National Park -- just a little more than a year after the plan was halted after Coca-Cola Co. voiced concerns about it.

The ban will take effect within the next 30 days, according to the Arizona Republic.

Plastic bottles make up about 30 percent of the Grand Canyon’s waste stream and are the largest source of garbage found inside the canyon.

The Grand Canyon, according to the paper, has installed 10 water-filling stations on the canyon’s South Rim and three on the North Rim, as have nearby hotels and restaurants.

The ban applies only to bottle water. Retailers at the park can sell soda and juice in plastic bottles and visitors can still bring them.
